The 411

Welcome to this post-apocalyptic world where Vamps are in charge and humans are fine and dandy providing they meet the regulated monthly blood-letting drive to the superior creatures of the night.

Our heroine, Allie Sekemoto, decides to ignore the vampire laws and live on the Fringe.  Her life consists of scavenging for food and avoiding the supernaturals at all cost, INCLUDING these creepy diseased vamps who run rabid on the outskirts.

So of course it bites (heh) when she is attacked and is giving the choice to become what she hates the most - a vampire - or die.  Guess which one she picks.

And now some thoughts

I wanted to race right through this book.  Kagawa is such a fun and beloved fantasy writer (you might remember her from the Iron Fey series) and THIS book seemed darker and let's see...older.  Like, I was expecting a bit of an adrenaline rush but with her expected fleshed out characters.  And there were some really cool themes taking place.  How could there not considering Allie had to choose to become something she despised to survive.  Also, she ends up hooking up with this band of cult-like humans searching for their Eden.

Lots of people handed this book a four star review and I can see why.  But I couldn't.  I'm guessing because I wanted it soooo bad.

BUT I do wanna make a shout out to Kagawa for having a kickbutt Asian leading lady.

Overall, I dig the change in vampire scene.

  1. I haven't read anything by Kagawa, but some of my kids love her...so maybe eventually? :)

It kind of creeps me out when MC have my name. I don't know what it is, but it throws me for a loop.

Btw, how have you been? I feel like we haven't talked in FOREVER.

  2. I love the whole "required blood donation" thing. That is clever. If the vampires were like Edward Cullen, what would be wrong with this type of world? (OK ... I'm a loser.)
